What kind of visa do we need?

We go with the Holland America Line 2 days to Hong Kong. After 15 days we come back in Shanghai and visit several ports in China. Then we go to Japan. After 7 days we come back in Shanghai, stay there a two nights in a hotel and fly back to Europe. What kind of visa do we need?

We don´t go with a group. We leave the cruiseship at every port, walk a while and go back to the ship.

Exact itinerary is important. If you arrive in China by boat at the Shanghai port, are received on a group tour by a Chinese travel agency and leave china within 15 days on the same boat then you don't need a visa.

If that is the case a tourist (L) visa will be required.
