Your itinerary is fine if your entire transit time in mainland China is shorter than 24 hours. In other words, the time for your allowed 24 hour visa free transit is calculated from your first scheduled arrival in China, in your case in Kunming, until your last scheduled departure, in your case from Shanghai. So, if your entire time is less than 24 hours, you can enjoy 24 hour visa free transit.
You will have to print out your flight tickets and have them in hard copy. You will be asked to show the tickets already in Mandalay and after that in Kunming too. After your arrival in Kunming, you will have to apply for 24 hour free entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport. Also, you will have to clear immigration and customs too. I just hope that you are flying on a single (through) ticket by China Eastern because 2 hours are quite a short time. Doable, of course, but you will have to be very agile to perform all the formalities.
I assume that you will be flying MU2568 from Mandalay to Kunming and MU5811 from Kunming to Shanghai. If I'm right, you will land in Hongqiao airport in Shanghai. Please, have in mind that your flight to US departs from another airport, Pu Dong, so you will have to make a transfer from one to the other airport. Here you don't have a single (through) ticket, so you will have to make a transfer on your own. The fastest way is by taxi, but I recommend that you take a direct shuttle bus - Shuttle Bus Line 1. It is very fast because it bypasses the city and uses the motorways. It costs 30 CNY per person. You will require at least 4 hours between Hongqiao and Pu Dong airports to be safe that you will catch your flight safely.
Now, you should just check your itinerary and see if my assumptions were right and if you have enough time to perform all the necessary details regarding your entire transit through China.
