About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

US to Shanghai to Ki'an to Shanghai to US (Aug 11th - Aug 16th)

Will the flight and stay for only one day in Ki'an require a visa, or would this qualify for the 144 hour visa free transit?

Your itinerary obviously does not qualify for visa-free transit. First, it is a visit to China and not a transit to a third country. Second, you are staying longer than 24 hours and visiting two transit areas. You need a visa or different flights.

Unfortunately, you cannot do that without a visa obtained in advance.
