About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise from Hakata (Japan) to Shanghai, stay two days - fly to Dusseldorf (Germany)

Hi
Me and my wife are UK citizens, we are going on a cruise which starts in Singapore and ends in Shanghai, the last port before Shanghai is in Japan, (Hakata) we stay two days in a hotel in Shanghai, (will explore Shanghai and not leave the district) then fly out from Pudong airport to Dusseldorf and then back to the UK. Are we eligible for the 144 hours visa free transit?

I'd very very grateful if you can help and tell us whether we do need to purchase visas or elligible for the 144 hour free visa transit.

If your flight from Shanghai to Dusseldorf has a connection in China or Japan then you will need a visa. Otherwise you do not.

These connection mostly have a transit either in Munich or Frankfurt.

Brian, I have seen that Sebastian is very cautious when answering and he is right because, as far as I know, there are no direct flights from Shanghai to Düsseldorf. You definitely have some stop in some place where you will catch your flight for Düsseldorf, but indeed, it cannot be in Japan or any place in mainland China.

I have the flight reference from Pudong airport to Dusseldorf, I just assumed it was direct. It would be nicer than a 13 hour flight to stop part way though :-)
