About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa for Guangzhou? I will going to Guangzhou via train or bus.

I have US passport. Going to Hong Kong. While in Hong Kong I want to go to Guangzhou for a day and head back to Hong Kong to fly back home to US.
