About the visa for entering China, and other worries

I'll be going to Nepal on China Eastern Airlines in October. Both coming and going, we will have a layover in both Shanghai and Kunming, each less than 24 hours. Questions: 1. Do we need a Visa for China? 2. Do we need to go through Customs, Security, etc. in both Chinese cities both times? 3. Will be be OK without exchanging any money while in China, only using US debit card for our needs? 4. Can I bring all of my prescription drugs through China? I'll be gone from home 3 weeks. Thanks for your help--I've never been out of my country in my 67 years.

Gabriela, thanks for the answers. Very helpful. I did forget one. If I have checked bags, will those be forwarded on to the next planes at Shanghai and Kunming (I'm assuming we change planes) or do I have to retrieve them both times?

You need to consult the airline staff and confirm this question. Generally speaking, if the two airlines have luggage check through service, then you don't need to collect the luggage and recheck them.
