Do we need original passport for applying HK visa for transit ?

Sending your passport is not required if applying directly to the Immigration Department by mail (just the photocopy and all pages with stamps). Normally it won't be retained by the embassy/consulate either due to long processing times (they will let you know when a decision has been received from HK). Keep in mind that if you are an Indian national then the only way is to apply by mail.
