Job offer in Guangzhou - residence permit?

I am looking to complete a 6 month contract in Guangzhou and will need a work permit. Will I also need a residence permit for being there for a comparatively short time?

Also can you advise on the turn around for getting both a work permit and a residence permit (if needed) in place?
