About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Multi Entry into Shanghi within 2 weeks

Hello, if I am flying from the New York to Shanghai with a 18 hour layover starting Wednesday in Chongqing (planning on leaving the airport) and then landing in Shanghai Thursday, only to turn around and catch a flight to Malaysia that same Thursday and then planning to return back to Shanghai on Monday morning to transfer back to a flight to New York, will I need a visa if I a US passport holder?

Do I properly understand you?

Your first itinerary:

New York - Chongqing - Shanghai - Malaysia has from the first scheduled landing, in your case in Chongqing, until your second departure, in your case from Shanghai 18 hours in total? If that is correct, then you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you will be allowed to exit the airport because you will transfer to a domestic flight.

Your second itinerary:

Malaysia - Shanghai - New York is eligible for even longer visa free transit option, 144 hour visa free transit. Of course, in case that you have reported all your stops within the itinerary.

Now, I would really like to hear from you whether I have properly understood your itineraries, so that we can happily conclude that you can travel visa free.

hello!
yes we have a odd itinerary but we did leave out a few counties in between:

Wednesday: New York to Chongqing (14 hour layover) onward to Shanghai.
Thursday: Shanghai to Malaysia
Friday: Malaysia to Thailand
Monday: Thailand to Shanghai
Tuesday: Shanghai to Chongqing (3 hour layover) onward to New York.

Is there a limit to how many "free visas" one can get? We only plan on leaving the airport that Wednesday in Chongqing when we have our 14 hour layover. Other than that, we just want to transfer to our new flights and not leave the airport while in Shanghai.
