About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

3 Days in Hangzhou

Hi, My wife and I will be travelling to Hangzhou from Hong Kong on 4th December and will leave Hangzhou on the 7th December for a flight back to London. However we have to change flights in Hong Kong. Do we qualify for the 72 hr Visa? We hold British passports.

You fly HK - Hangzhou - HK - London?

You don't qualify for the 144h twov (it's not a visa) and you have to apply for a visa or change your flight.
Take a flight back from Hangzhou to Macau, take the ferry to HK and you're fine for the 144h twov.
Or you fly Macau - Hangzhou - HK - London, that's fine too.

OK. So I believe its a 144 hr Visa free transit now if I wish to travel to Hangzhou as that has replaced the 72 hr Visa free transit ? We will be flying to London from Hangzhou via HK. We will not be visiting HK. Do we qualify for the 144 hr Visa free transit?

You need a visa or different flights, as explained by Thomas above.

So you are saying my flight to London cannot be via HK. All I am doing in HK is getting a connecting flight to London. When I check in in Hangzhou it will be to London not HK.

Kim, you’ve got the same correct answer from three people now. Get a visa or change your flights. Otherwise you will surely be denied boarding.

Regardless of the nature of your stop, you have to know that for any visa free transit scheme only the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese destination matter. So, your immediate points are:

Hong Kong - Hangzhou - Hong Kong

Everything before your "first" Hong Kong and after your "second" Hong Kong really doesn't matter. Unfortunately.
