About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa Free in Beijing and Shanghai

I am a US citizen flying from the USA to Beijing and staying there for 3 days. I will then fly to Shanghai board a Holland America Cruise line that will not depart for other Asian countries until the second day. The cruise will end in Hong Kong. I will disembark in Hong Kong and fly directly to the USA on the same day. Will I need a China Visa?

Yes, you need a Chinese tourist (L) visa because you will travel through two Chinese transit zones, in your case Beijing and Shanghai in a row and that is allowed visa free only if the entire duration of travel is less than 24 hours. Keep this in mind and apply for your visa on time.
