If your itinerary is: Thailand - Beijing - Thailand, you are not eligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme and a visa for China obtained in advance is a must.

Of course, you can do it even without a visa, but you will have to introduce a third country or eligible territory within the itinerary. For example, something like this:

Thailand - Beijing - Hong Kong - Thailand

Anyway, you should have in mind that you are required to stay in Beijing for at least 25 hours to be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit.

You can also use 24 hours visa free transit to minimize your stay in Beijing, but even in this case, you have to create an eligible itinerary like the above mentioned, but you should take care that you book your tickets separately to secure that you will have to exit the transit area in Beijing. In other words, you have to travel from Thailand to Beijing on one and from Beijing back to Thailand on another ticket taking care that your itinerary is eligible.
