NZ citizen, stopping in Shanghai for a couple of days.

Hi, I have a tricky situation:
1. We hold New Zealand passports, flying from UK to Shanghai. We have booked a flight out of Shanghai 2 days later that has a stopover in Shengzhen then onward to New Zealand. We will not leave the airport at Shengzhen. Are we eligible for the 144 visa-free for our stay in Shanghai?

2. Also 2 weeks later we will be flying back from New Zealand to Shanghai also with a stopover in Shengzhen (again won't leave airport). We want to tour Shanghai for up to 144 hours and then flying onward back to UK. Can we use the 144 visa-free for both situations 1. and 2. in Shanghai? We are very confused. Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your reply! So even flight layovers where you don't leave the airport count as travelling in China?

Absolutely. You clear immigration at your first landing and proceed as a domestic passenger.

Unfortunately, you are not eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Beijing since you will have two stops within mainland China that automatically limits you to 24 hours visa free transit scheme. Since you will stay longer than 24 hours within China, you will have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa. To be precise, you will need a double entry Chinese tourist (L) visa because your second itinerary is also ineligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme.
