Nothing special... In reality, your first mentioning that you intend to fly on 72/144 hours visa free transit (please, check whether your Chinese destination is under 72 or 144 hours visa free transit scheme) will be upon check-in in the country from where you intend to fly to China. You will have to show them your relevant tickets in hard copy and then you will receive your boarding pass(es) to your destination. There is no any application.
Anyway, there is a blue form that you will fill out upon your landing in China next to the counter and where you will again present your tickets and preferably the accommodation booking too.
