About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Process for Shanghai 144 transit without visa

I am traveling from US to SH to Hong Kong on China Eastern airlines. If I understand correctly, as long as my stay is under 144 hours, I will not need to apply for a visa, is that correct? Will I need to notify my airline before my flight or on the day when I check in? Also, when I land in the city at the airport, will there be an area where I will be directed to in order to get the stamp?

You didn’t mention your nationality, but if your passport is from one of the 53 qualifying countries and those are your only stops, then you don’t need a visa. You tell your airline on the day when you check-in. Just follow the signs when you land, it’s very obvious. Tens of thousands of people transit in the city without a visa every year, it’s nothing special.
