About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Is HK>Shengzhen>Macau eligible

From HK it would be much easier to go to shengzhen by train but I just want to know if this is free visa visit is definitely ONLY for air passengers even it’s from HK to Shengzhen, if it’s for air passengers only then does this mean I have to fly to Guangzhou (since there’s no flight to shengzhen from HK) and take train to shengzhen?

Sophia, you have only one option if you want to travel visa free on the mentioned route:

- Before your departure from Hong Kong you will have to book online in advance a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port to Macau through TurboJet website. I will explain why later.
- You have to take a plane from Hong Kong to Guangzhou where you will apply for 144 hours visa free transit valid for entire province of Guangdong.
- You will take a train from Guangdong to Shenzhen
- You will stay in Shenzhen up to 144 hours.
- You will take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port to Macau. Here you will travel on exactly that ferry you have bought your ticket for. You will need a ticket bought in advance because this particular ticket is a proof that you will exit mainland China within 144 hours. Also, you will have to show this ticket, in reality an e-voucher (or e-confirmation) already in Hong Kong at the time of your check-in for your flight to Guangzhou.
- After you have exited mainland China and arrived in Macau, you can immediately return to Hong Kong

The alternative is to cross the border on Lo Wu (Luhou) crossing and obtain there 5 day Shenzhen VOA. This visa allows you to stay as much as you wish within the 5 days validity and to depart from Shenzhen directly to Hong Kong or to Macau with any available mean of transport. Now, you should take into consideration whether you just need to visit Shenzhen or also other parts of Guangdong province. If it is only Shenzhen that interests you, then Shenzhen VOA is definitely cheaper option than flying to Guangzhou and return by train to Shenzhen.
