About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We arrive in Shanghai at 14:35 on 13 July and we leave fly out at 9:10pm on 14 July

Do we need to do anything to activate the 72 hour visa free transit? We are Australian citizens flying home from Rome to Brisbane and stopping in Shanghai for 31 hours, along the way - to break up our long flight.

If your itinerary is Rome - Shanghai - Brisbane without any additional landings, you are perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai (144 hours has replaced 72 hours a couple of years ago). You will apply for this option upon your landing and you really don't need any special documentation with the exception of your onward ticket and maybe accommodation booking in hard copy.
