About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hours transit without visa

Hello - thank you for this informative article! I, a US citizen, am arriving in shanghai from Seoul on a Friday and leaving to the US on a Monday. I will meet the 72 hour requirement. However, I would like to confirm that I do not need to do anything in advance, and that informing the airline in Seoul will suffice.

Thanks!

Your itinerary is fine if those are your only stops, i.e. you are not allowed to have an additional stop within mainland China during your first flight from Seoul to Shanghai and an additional stop in mainland China and South Korea during your second flight from Shanghai to US. By the way, you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit because 72 hours are replaced by 144 a couple of years ago. Also, you should just use correct terminology because it is visa free and not "72 or 144 hours visa" :).

Harrison, I forgot to confirm that you don't have to anything before your departure from Seoul. The first time that you will mention your intention to fly visa free will be at the check-in counter at Seoul airport. They will know what does it mean and you will be allowed to board the plane for Shanghai.
