Actually, you should know that you are looking after 24 hours visa free transit (without visa) and not for 24 hours visa! Please, just use correct terminology to avoid any possible misunderstandings.

Now, you have to determine whether your itinerary is eligible or not. To be eligible you have to fly from one country (India) via China (Guangzhou) to the third country and your entire transit through China, from your scheduled arrival until your scheduled departure has to be shorter than 24 hours. If this is the case, you are definitely eligible for 24 hours visa free transit.

What will be your necessary actions at Guangzhou airport depends on type of ticket(s) you have. In case that you travel on through (single) ticket on one airline, you will just stay in the transit area doing nothing in formal way. In case that you travel on different tickets and in case that you have to collect your luggage and make new check-in, you will apply for formal 24 hours free entry permit that will allow you to exit the transit zone and perform all the necessary formalities. In case when your transit time is very long, for example 20 hours or so, you will also apply for 24 hours free entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport and to make a stroll in the city, if you want and if your permit is granted.

Basically, this is it.

Yes, you can. Anyway, the longer the layover, the greater are your chances to be allowed to exit the airport, i.e. to be granted the mentioned entry permit. Chinese authorities especially honor hotel bookings, so if your layover is during the night hours, you should definitely book an accommodation in advance and present a confirmation in hard copy along with your onward tickets. In reality, most applications for entry permit in Beijing, where a layover is longer than 8 hours, are granted. I emphasize Beijing because the practice has demonstrated that Beijing authorities are more prone to grant entry permits than in some other Chinese cities.
