About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can 72-hour free visa be used if flying into Hong Kong?

Our family (U.S. citizens) are flying into Hong Kong, which I understand is a Special Administrative Area and not a part of Guangdong Province. We are arriving early for a 14-day cruise (the cruise leaves from Hong Kong and does not visit any other Chinese ports and ends in Singapore). We would like to use the 72-hour free visa option to take the new bullet train from West Kowloon Station to visit Guangzhou or Shenzhen for a stay of two nights. Is this permitted? Or, if not, would we be able to go to Shenzhen for a day visit using the 24-hour free visa? Thank you.

Shenzhen has a visa on arrival but must stay in Shenzhen city. The cost for Americans is the same as applying for a 10 year multi entry visa in advance which allows travel throughout China. Its $140 USD

Unfortunately, nothing of the mentioned is available for your travel plans to Guangdong province. In reality, you can use 144 hours visa free option to visit Guangdong, but it would require a flight to Guangzhou, then by train to Shenzhen, from there by ferry to Macau and then from Macau back to Hong Kong. I can explain that in detail, but I assume that it already appears to be quite complicated.

The alternative to 144 hours visa free transit is 5 day Shenzhen visa on arrival (VOA), that allows you to obtain it at the border while traveling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. This is very simple process and quite convenient for quite a number of visitors to Shenzhen, but it also has two drawbacks:

- It allows you to move just within the area of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, so you cannot visit some other places like Guangzhou or some rural areas.
- The price for US citizens for Shenzhen VOA is 956 CNY.

In the end, I will just confirm that you are allowed to travel and stay in Hong Kong without visa.
