Your itinerary is qualified for 24 hours visa free transit. In reality, you don't need a visa for both cases, whether you stay at the airport or leave it after you apply for 24 hours free entry permit. Visa simply doesn't apply in your case. As far as passport control is concerned, you will almost certainly pass through one check point within transit area even without exiting the airport. Now, it's hard to predict whether your passport will be scanned or just visually treated by relevant authorities. In any case, it's almost certain that you will have to hand over your passport to be checked.
