China bank account requirement. UnionPay card is necessary!

I went to CBC to open an account because AliPay and WeChat works EVERYWHERE. I am married to a Chinese citizen and didn't think there would be any issue. I was wrong. I was told that the "Duration of Stay" on my Visa needed to be a minimum of 1 year. (I have a tourist Visa) I am reading several different situations on this.
1: Try different banks and/or locations. Despite the "rules", some bank locations lower (ignore) the requirement.
2: After 5 years of marriage to a Chinese citizen, I can apply for a Visa that will extend my duration of stay, thus meeting the bank requirements.

Are these valid statements? I plan on retiring and staying in China for the majority of each year. WeChat pay and a UnionPay card are necessary to avoid carrying large amounts of cash!

It has been standard procedure for quite a while that most "big four" banks won't open bank accounts to those without residence permits. If you are married to a Chinese citizen then you should get a Q1 visa and then apply for a family-based residence permit. That will solve most of the issues you will face with just a tourist or a Q2 visa given that neither can be converted to RPs.
