About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use the 144 hour visa free transit

Hi, I am flying from Bali to Shanghai and then from Shanghai to Dublin. I am staying for 2 nights in Shanghai. I am flying into Shanghai on AirAsia and flying out of Shanghai on Aeroflot. Can you please tell me if I qualify for the 144 hour visa free transit. I have onward flight tickets to Dublin with a confirmed seat. I am an Irish citizen. Thank you.

Your itinerary Bali - Shanghai - Moscow (I assume) is eligible, but you have to be precise because you have missed to say that your next destination after Shanghai will not be Dublin, but (I assume) Moscow. Aeroflot doesn't fly nonstop from Shanghai to Dublin. Within 144 hours visa free scheme everything that matters are points immediately before and after your Chinese destination. So, if your itinerary is as I assume that it is, it is eligible.

Hi, thank you for your reply. My flight from Shanghai to Dublin on Aeroflot has a 14 hour layover in Moscow booked on one ticket but we would be unable to leave the airport without a Russian visa. Would we still qualify for the 144 hour transit visa free in Shanghai if I’m returning to my country of origin? I leave Dublin to go to the Maldives for 4 nights, then onto Bali for 7 nights, then Shanghai for 2 nights then back to Dublin via Moscow. All of the flights are booked separately and all with different airlines. Can I use the A,B,C route as Bali, Shanghai, Moscow or Dublin? Thank you

Yes, your itienerary is definitely eligible and you will fly via Shanghai visa free. The reason I have mentioning the fact that you will probably land in Moscow is in the fact that 144 hours visa free transit function in a way where only immediate points before and after China matter. So, for Chinese authorities, your itinerary is Bali - Shanghai - Moscow. This is important for 144 hours visa free rules, but they will, of course, ask you about your further flights from Mosow because you as Irish citizens need a visa for Russia. Also, flying on different companies and separate tickets is fine. Just keep in mind to have your tickets and accommodation booking in hard copy upon your landing in Shanghai.
