About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

We will be flying Melbourne to Shanghai 16th. August 2019

We will be 2 days in SH before embarking on a 29 night cruise on the Magestic Princess from SH around Japan , Vietnam, Hong Kong, SH, Singapore, back to Sydney. Is the 144 day visa free exemption appropriate and can we go to the Chinese Consulate in Melbourne to fill out the appropriate forms. What documents would we need to produce apart from our Passports?

Thank you for your reply. It has been most helpful. When we arrive at the Airport in SH, what documentation do we need to produce other than our Passports and our travel itinerary? Are there forms we have to fill out either prior to departure, or on arrival at SH?

Its eligible as long as you do not enter China from Japan before your cruise to Japan and you have no other stops in China on the way to SH. Its 2 separate cruise itin's according to the Princess website. SH > Japan > SH > South Korea > Hong Kong > Vietnam > Singapore > Australia

Assuming that you plan to reach SH from Australia by nonstop flight and after that embark on the cruise that goes to Japan, your itinerary is Australia - SH - Japan and that would be perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in SH.

Also, for your return, your itinerary is Hong Kong - SH - Singapore is also perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit.

Now, if you have written the places you will visit in right chronological order, you are perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit twice.

By the way, I encourage you to look at your itinerary once again because the detail where you have written that your ship will have the following order of visit: SH - Japan - Vietnam - Hong Kong - SH - Singapore is a bit strange because the ship will go from Japan to Vietnam in the south, then return north to Hong Kong and SH and after that proceed again to the south to Singapore.

Please, just check the exact order of your port calls, publish them here, and we will be able to exactly reconfirm your eligibility for visa free travel.

You really do not need any kind of visa. You have two eligible visits to China and in both cases you are just fine by traveling on 144 or 24 hours visa free transit:

Singapore - SH - Tokyo - fine
Kochi - SH - Busan - fine

As you can see, if you have provided your port calls in exact sequence, you are eligible for 144 or 24 hours visa free transits in SH twice.

Beside your passports you will bring with you your flight tickets, your accommodation booking confirmations and also a confirmations of cruise boarding in hard copy ready to be shown to relevant authorities in every place where they ask them from you and that can and probably will happen in Australia and Singapore. Of course, it will be required in SH without any doubt. You will have to fill out a yellow form usually offered by crew in the plane before your landing in SH and another, blue one, upon landing. After you have filled out the forms, you will approach the counter, get a stamp in the passport and be allowed to leave the airport. Please, keep in mind that relevant documentation will be required also by Japanese authorities in your last Japanese port before your departure for SH. Again, you will have a confirmation of cruise boarding for your second cruise that will take you from SH to South Korea and after that toward Hong Kong, Vietnam and Australia.
