About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Want to obey rules

I have a ten year Visa. I am thinking of going to China for a couple of months to do some volunteer work. I will not be paid, of course. I am wondering about gifts. Chinese people love to give gifts. Can I receive gifts. Is there a certain monetary limit on gifts? Can I stay with friends for no charge? How about if my friends take me out for a meal. Is there a web site with the answers to these questions.
Next question: if I came and had a job with an American company that hired me in the USA to work for them and not at all in China, could I work in China under that sort of an arrangement?
Thank you very much.

Unfortunately, there is no way for you to obey the rules 100%. For starters, L visa holders are not legally permitted to work, while M visa holders are only legally permitted to conduct business while in China. F visas can be used for other purposes but work is also not one of them. The only legal way to work in China is the Z visa which requires time and effort (it's really not much easier than the H1B visa process in the US, go figure).
