About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

I will be traveling to Shanghai for a few days in July

And I am eligible to take advantage of 144 visa free transit. Can I stay at my friend's place in the city or do I need to stay at the hotel?

Anna, you have not mentioned your flight itinerary and that is probably the most important detail beside your citizenship. In case that you do not travel in the way: country A - China (country B) - country C, you will not qualify for your stay at all.

By the way, if your itinerary is in accordance with the rules for 144 hours visa free transit you will be almost certainly allowed to stay at your friend's place or with your family member. When I say almost, I say that to prepare you for less possible outcome where the immigration official will insist that you should book a hotel. In reality and in most cases, you will be allowed to do that, but have the address and the names of the people where you are planning to stay ready with you to show these data to relevant authorities. By the way, you should register yourself at the relevant authorities, i.e. police, in case of your stay outside the commercial accommodation places. Seriously, don't forget to do the registration.
