Your son can either use his L visa and leave China once every 60 days or get a new Q2 visa and leave every 120 or 180 days.

An alternative is a Q1 visa, but that requires you or your wife to contact the local Exit and Entry Administration to check the detailed requirements of obtaining a family-based residence permit after entering China with said visa. The associated residence permit is valid for at least 1 year and at most 5 years and during this time your kid no longer needs to leave the country.

You can also apply for a Q2 visa if you want to.
