Washington, DC/NGOYA Japan/SHANGHAI/Washington Visa free transit

Thank you for response on 144hr visa qualification answer. To qualify, does the tickets have to be on same itinerary? Do I have to travel with the same airline? Is there a minimum amount of days that I have to spend in Ngoya, Japan? Thanks again.
