Philippines -> Shanghai -> US (home)

I am currently traveling the Philippines and have a 4 day stopover in Shanghai before I return back to the States.
A lot of sites say that your flight from China needs to be to a country that you have a visa in. Is this weird wording or can I not qualify for this as I will be returning to my home country?

You're fine for the 144h twov, don't worry.
As an US citizen you don't need a visa to return to your home country so the immigration won't check it.
