Hi ...visiting Datong in October for two nights.

Would you suggest getting a tour guide as opposed to DIY ?
thinking of doing the two day tour as suggested
1-Day
Shanhua Temple→Huayan Monastery→ Nine-Dragon Screen→ Yungang Grottoes
The first three points of interest are all in the downtown area - you could get around it within half a day and then take the city-bus heading for Yungang Grottoes.

day2 Wooden Pagoda→Hanging Monastery

It is okay to find a tour guide and you can have a deep understanding of these attractions. The half of a day may be a little tight, but it is possible if you depart early in the morning. There is no problem of your other itinerary. Nice trip!
