About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Layover in Beijing - Not 100% sure

I'm flying outbound from the US to Hong Kong via Shanghai (no layover plans just a connection). On the return I'm flying back from Bali (DPS airport) to Beijing on China Eastern (DPS-PEK flight is nonstop - not stopping in Shanghai). I have Delta flight leaving 48 hours later from Beijing to US. Do I need a visa? or would the return routing qualify me for the free stay in Beijing on my return?

I think I qualify for free stay but don't want to assume anything. Thanks.
