About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel to Beijing. Do I qualify for 72 hr or 144 hr transit visa?

I am a US Citizen, travelling from Vancouver -> Beijing -> Hong Kong, then on to Manila.

Also to confirm, I cannot go Van -> Beijing -> Shanghai -> Hong Kong without a visa, correct?

You cannot Van -> Beijing -> Shanghai -> Hong Kong without a visa if the layover time in China is under 24 hours. Vancouver -> Beijing -> Hong Kong will be fine.
