About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hours free visa in Beijing

I am (US citizen ) comming from Los Angles to Beijing and Beijing to Kathmandu Nepal, those two bookings are separate booking. I am arriving Beijing from Los Angles on May 17 at 1:50 pm. My next flight from Beijing to Kathmandu is on May 19 8:35 am. I would like to visit greatwall of china during my Beijing Stay. Do I need to obtain visa before I arrive Beijing or I can enjoy 72 hours free transit in Beijing?

You must check your flight details. If you are on, for example, China Eastern from Beijing to Kathmandu, you will have a stop in Kunming. This disqualifies you from 72/144 hours transit without visa and you will need a visa before your arrive in Beijing.

Hi there! I did that a couple of years ago without any problems. There is a great company that will pick you up and take you to the great wall and then bring you back to the airport. I believe it was called Beijing layover tours. It’s a super easy process!

Thank you for quick response. From Beijing to Kathmandu trip, I have 2 hours stop in Hong Kong. Does it disqualify me to get 72 hours free visa?

The stop in Hong Kong is fine, because it counts as a 3rd country. It would only be a problem if you stopped in mainland China. USA-Beijing-Hong Kong is an eligible route for 144 hours transit without visa.
