Can I transit through hong kong if im not permit to transit through china mainland?

two years ago me and my brother we overstay our visa in china mainland cause we missed our flight. We got held back and pay a fine and was told we can't transit through china for the next 10 years except through hong kong. I wanna make sure this is safe before I book another cheap flight that transit to hong kong
