Enter with an L visa, get a work visa in China?

I have an unlimited entry L for 10 years. An agency in China found me a job at a school in a large Chinese city (not Shanghai). They were able to get me a work permit. They told me to come in on my L and they will get me a residency permit/work Z. Someone else told me this is impossible and I should get my work visa before I go to China. Does anyone out there really know the answer to this issue?

Hi, you can try to change your L type into work Z type at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB within China. If it can be done, you don't need to leave China.
