Upon arrival

Is there anything I must do after leaving the airport? I heard that we have to check in somewhere if not staying in a hotel

If you will be in the country for more than 24 hours and not staying at a hotel, you will need to go to the nearest police station to register. Local cops will provide a receipt and you need to keep it safe until you have left China.

Just tell them that you are not staying at a hotel and you are there to register yourself. Bring your AirBnB host or your friend along (and their ID too) as local cops may not speak English.
