About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Must I register with local police station if I stay >24 hr? Do they request that paper prior to exit

That is a must if you are not staying at a hotel. Beijing is especially strict on this as it will be verified electronically when you are leaving the country. Failure to comply, if discovered, will result in a 2-year ban from using visa-free transit.
