L visa to Q1 visa - 3 years. Can I legally work in china

I am currently in China on a 10 year 60 day L. Both of my parents are Chinese citizens (born and raised) and I am an American, which qualifies me for a 3 year or 5 year Q1. I opted for the 3 year option. I will receive my Q1 shortly. Can I legally work in China with my Q1? What are the repercussions If I do?

You cannot work in China legally without valid work Z type.

Repercussions range from nothing at all to being a pawn in the diplomatic spats between the two countries and your face all over the news. Always have your paperwork in order. (NOT a message from the Government of Canada.)
