Changing from a work visa to a student visa from within China

Hi, I have been working legally in China on a Z and would like to change to an X student at the end of my contract. Is this something I can do without leaving China and if I need to leave can I do this at any Chinese embassy for must this be done from the applicant's home country? I am going out on vacation this summer and can probably do it where I vacation.

You can try to change it at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB within China. If it can succeed, you don’t need to leave China for that.
