Visa for Under 48 hours in Shanghai

I'm staying over in Shanghai for a day and a half before going on a cruise. I hold a British passport, would I still need a visa? The first day and a half will be the only time I'll be in China.

If you are traveling Country A - Shanghai (144 hours) - Country B then you don't need to apply for a visa as you can use free transit policy.

Great, thank you. Where do I apply for the 144 hour visa exemption? When I arrive at Shanghai airport or do I have to do it online beforehand?

You need to inform the airlines that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane, and then apply for it after arrival at Shanghai.
