What area is best to stay in for a short break during the New Year in Guangzhou?

Going to spend a few days in GZ over the Chinese New Year holiday and would welcome some recommendations on a good area to stay. Firstly of all looking for a good neighborhood and preferably somewhere which has good links to public transport and easy access to the main sites; second we like an area where there will be New Year activities. Any recommendations gratefully received. FYI we are a couple travelling with two kids, aged 9 and 7. Many thanks
