Hong Kong-Shanghai-Macau doesn't need a transit visa for US passport if you are staying for 144 hours.

I need clarification. What do you mean by "Doesn't need" the transit visa? We would like to use the 144 hour transit rather than getting the regular 10 year visa. Does the Hong Kong > Shanghai > Macau itinerary allow us to use the 144 hour transit or are we disqualified from the 144 hour transit because Hong Kong and Macau are part of China?
