About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

flying from usa to phuket.

Appreciate the help... flying lax, usa to beijing to bangkok to phuket return phuket to bangkok to beijing with 34hr layover in beijing (want to go see great wall, forbidden city, ming tombs) before heading back to usa. 72hr free transit is available? Apply for entry permit before boarding China Air in Los Angeles?

You don't need a transit visa. You just tell the airline at the airport. ("China Air" doesn't exist, by the way. Don't confuse Air China with China Airlines; they are very different carriers).
