About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

layover in either direction?

Is this visa only valid if I am on my way to the 3rd country, or can I do this on my way home from the 3rd country?

Either way works. It just means the country you enter china from cannot be the next country you travel to/through.

USA > China > Thailand > China > USA is allowed as two separate transits.

USA > China > USA is not allowed.
