About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Barcelona- Auckland NZ via Moscow, Beijing and Shanghai.

Hi there, I’m a Canadian citizen travelling from Barcelona, Spain to Auckland, New Zealand via Moscow, Beijing and Shanghai.

Barcelona to Moscow - Jan. 2nd
Moscow to Beijing overnight -Jan. 2/3rd
9hour layover in Beijing
Beijing to Shanghai -Jan 3rd arrive in evening
2.5 hour layover in Shanghai
Shanghai to Auckland overnight - Jan. 4th

Based on everything I’ve researched I can apply for a transit g when I check in at the airline and can get a proper form. Is this correct or do I need something more?

Yes as long as there is less than 24 hours between scheduled arrival in Beijing and the scheduled departure from Shanghai

Does this change if I don’t leave the airport? From what I understand as long as I stay in the airports I wouldn’t even need to apply for a transit visa as I wouldn’t be going in to city.

It's irrelevant if you leave the airport (or even the aircraft) at all. If it is less than 24 hours from your scheduled arrival time in Beijing to scheduled departure time from Shanghai then you don't need a visa. If it is a minute longer than 24 hours then you need a visa.

If you are getting a transit g, you have to get it from the embassy/consulate before you travel. You can't get it when you check in with the airline.
