Regards the 24 hour transit visa free period in China.

I am arriving in Shanghai early January on a cruise ship and disembark.. I intend to fly out to Hong Kong the same day. Do I get the 24hour transit free period and what process do I have to go through. Do I need to apply in advance or can I get the transit free period on arrival with production of the air travel ticket?
I have a UK passport. I don't want to risk falling foul of the Chinese authorities. The cruise line will not give an answer and are prevaricating.

You can apply for the 24h twov in Shanghai. Apply for 24-hour free entry permit in 4 steps: Fill an Arrival/Departure Card at the border inspection counter; Get the temporary entry permit stamp or sticker; Claim the luggage (if needed); Go through the customs.
