Your transit is over 24 hours with multiple stops and that absolutely requires a transit visa regardless of your nationality. Strictly speaking, you will be considered to have left the airport once you clear immigration in Guangzhou as it is required for domestic flights. (The term "to leave the airport" is colloquial for staying in the sterile transit area.)

What if the arrival to Guangzhou and departing from Guangzhou is the same airport?

It still depends on the length of your stay in Mainland China. If it's under 24 hours you don't need a visa but the immigration officer will decide whether you can leave the transit area. If it isn't then you need a visa.
