About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

24 hour TWOV with 2 stops

Hi, I am USA citizen.
I am travelling 2 stops via china leaving within 24 hours on both ways.
Lax-Nanjing-Kunming-Nepal
return: Nepal-Kunming-Shangai(PVG)-LAX
Rules are very clear that I don't need chinese visa. but i appreciate your help if you can confirm this. Also, in China if officials need more information is there any online documentation I can show them? (Or during the Airport checkin process).
Also, Do I have to stay within the airport or using entry permit can I exit the airport? What is the cost for entry permit?

You can apply for 24h twov in mainland China and no visa will be needed. The free transit is free of charge and you can apply for it after your arrival. You can show your valid passport and onward ticket to apply for the entry permit. If you want to leave Shanghai airport, you might need to provide the hotel reservation in there.
