About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

LHR-PEK-PEK-ALM-LHR

A question on the 'separate flight' rule mentioned above: I'm flying for business to Almaty, Kazakhstan from London, and would like to take advantage of via Beijing to see family in 72 hours.
If the travel is made up of flights from different carriers (Beijing isn't naturally a transit stop for Almaty), does this still count as a visa free entry?

All that is required is that your stops immediately before and immediately after China are in different countries, and your passport is from one of the 53 qualifying countries.
