Visa requirement for Japan return connection?

I am a USA resident who will be arriving in Beijing with less than a 48 hour stay, then departing Beijing back to the USA with a connecting flight home via Japan. Do I need to apply for any type of visa? Does the 144 hour visa free exemption apply?

72-Hour Visa Free Transit is enough for you to take a layover tour in Beijing with less than a 48-hour stay. You can apply for the transit visa exemption at the special counter upon arrival at the Beijing Capital International Airport.
